Dental X-rays

Why Dental X-Rays Are Important

Dental X-rays are one of the most important diagnostic tools in modern dentistry. They reveal problems that cannot be seen during a visual exam alone, helping our team detect issues early and plan effective treatments. At Chips Dental Associates, we use advanced digital X-ray technology at our Gibsonia and Pittsburgh offices to provide fast, safe, and accurate imaging for patients of all ages.

Much of what happens in your mouth occurs beneath the surface. Cavities between teeth, infections at the root of a tooth, bone loss from gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth, and developmental issues in children are just a few examples of conditions that X-rays can reveal before they cause pain or become more serious. Without X-rays, these problems could go undetected until they require more extensive and costly treatment.

Digital X-Rays vs. Traditional Film X-Rays

Our practice uses digital X-ray technology, which offers several advantages over traditional film-based imaging. Digital X-rays produce up to 90% less radiation than conventional film X-rays, making them safer for patients, including children and pregnant women (when necessary). Images are available instantly on a screen, allowing our team to review findings with you in real time. Digital images can be enlarged, enhanced, and stored electronically for easy reference at future visits.

Types of Dental X-Rays We Offer

Depending on your needs, we may take one or more types of dental X-rays during your visit. Bitewing X-rays show the upper and lower back teeth and are commonly used to detect cavities between teeth. Periapical X-rays capture the entire tooth from crown to root, useful for identifying infections, abscesses, and bone loss. Panoramic X-rays provide a broad view of the entire mouth, including all teeth, the jawbone, and surrounding structures. This type is especially useful for orthodontic planning, implant evaluation, and wisdom teeth assessment. We also use 3D CT scanning for advanced diagnostics, particularly for dental implant planning and complex surgical cases.

How Often Do You Need Dental X-Rays?

The frequency of X-rays depends on your individual oral health, risk factors, and dental history. New patients typically receive a full set of X-rays at their first visit. After that, most adults need bitewing X-rays once a year and a panoramic X-ray every three to five years. Children and patients with a higher risk of decay may need X-rays more frequently. Our team follows established guidelines and only recommends imaging when it is clinically beneficial.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes. The amount of radiation from digital dental X-rays is extremely low. A single digital bitewing X-ray exposes you to less radiation than you receive from natural environmental sources in a single day. We also use lead aprons and thyroid collars for additional protection, and we follow all safety guidelines to minimize exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental X-Rays

Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Digital dental X-rays produce very low radiation and are generally considered safe during pregnancy when clinically necessary. However, we typically postpone non-urgent imaging until after delivery as a precaution.

Do children need dental X-rays?

Yes. X-rays are important for monitoring the development of children's teeth, detecting early cavities, and evaluating the position of incoming permanent teeth.

How long does it take to get dental X-rays?

Digital X-rays take just a few minutes. Images are available immediately, so your dentist can review them during the same appointment.
